Body Oil vs. Lotion: What is the Difference?
Ultimately, there are two key differences between body lotion and body oil. One of them being the water content in the formula. Body oils are anhydrous, meaning that the formula has no water content; while body lotions are a water based emulsion made with water, oils, and other nourishing ingredients. The second major difference is the role of the product in your body care routine. Body lotions are more lightweight formulas that are typically made with humectants and emollients that work to hydrate the skin and improve its texture. Body oils, on the other hand, are occlusive which means that they create a physical barrier on top of the skin to prevent the loss of water.
Should Body Oil or Lotion be Applied First?
It is most beneficial to apply body lotion first and then apply body oil. By applying the products in this order, the body lotion is able to hydrate and moisturize the skin with the body oil being applied on top to seal in those benefits. Personally, I love to do this with the Saltair body lotions and body oils because the fragrances are to die for! Saltair currently has two body oils, in their Pink Beach and Santal Bloom fragrances, that I love to pair with the matching body lotions. I also like to mix it up and layer the Santal Bloom Body Lotion with the Pink Beach Body Oil when I’m looking for a more unique scent of the day.
