  • How To Properly Exfoliate Before A Spray Tan

Exfoliating before a spray tan is crucial to ensure an even and long-lasting tan. Proper exfoliation removes dead skin cells and creates a smooth canvas for the spray tan solution to adhere to. There are essentially three types of exfoliation. Chemical exfoliation is achieved with an AHA/BHA ingredient that dissolves the top layer of skin where physical exfoliation is accomplished via a soft noticeable particle in the product applied. When using a tool such as a brush or sponge, that is referred to as mechanical exfoliation. Our recommendation for self tanner prep is a physical exfoliation process.

How to Exfoliate Before a Spray Tan Step-by-Step :

    Timing is Key:

It is recommended to exfoliate the day before your spray tan appointment. This allows your skin to recover from any potential irritation or redness caused by exfoliation. A physical scrub is most often used in a shower or bath for ease of application on damp skin.

    Exfoliation:

Gently massage the Saltair KP Body Scrub onto damp skin with fingertips to exfoliate. Focus on areas where dead skin tends to accumulate, such as elbows, knees, ankles, and any rough patches. Rinse thoroughly and make sure there is no residue left on your skin. Once complete, gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Do not rub vigorously, as this can cause irritation.

    Moisturize Sparingly:

Dry skin patches can cause uneven spray tan application so applying Apply an even layer of our Saltair Fragrance Free Body Lotion to areas prone to dryness, like your elbows, knees, and ankles, will help avoid this issue. Heavy creams or lotions with fragrance can create a barrier that interferes with the spray tan solution's absorption, so we suggest a light emulsion lotion.

What to Avoid Before a Spray Tan:

It is recommended to avoid using any body oils or products that contain fragrance and and/or heavy moisturizers on the day of your spray tan appointment, as these can create a barrier that hinders the tanning solution from adhering to your skin.

Be Sure to Follow Your Spray Tan Technician's Instructions:

Properly exfoliating before a spray tan will help ensure that the tan appears natural, fades evenly, and lasts as long as possible. Always consult with your spray tan technician for any specific pre and post-tan recommendations they may have for your particular spray tan solution or method.
